Chippewa Valley Book Festival Luncheon at CVM

Posted: September 17, 2014

The Chippewa Valley Museum in Eau Claire's Carson Park will host the Chippewa Valley Book Festival luncheon "What It Takes to Write an Adventure Book" with author Julie Buckles on Wednesday, October 15 from 12:00 to 2:00 pm.

Enjoy a tasty sandwich accompanied by a selection of fruits and dessert as Julie Buckles tells how notes, letters, and paddling shaped a book, Paddling to Winter. Buckles will talk about the challenge of turning herself and the people she loves into full-fledged "characters." She'll also speak to the art of shaping journal notes and old letters into an adventure narrative, reading favorite passages from Paddling to Winter to illustrate her point.

Julie Buckles was born in the driftless region of Wisconsin, and now lives in Washburn, WI, one mile from Lake Superior. Buckles has worked as a reporter and freelance writer and teaches journalism as an adjunct professor at Northland College in Ashland. She is a regular contributor to Lake Superior Magazine and WPR's Wisconsin Life, and presents her wilderness adventures around the Midwest.

Buckles' first book, Paddling to Winter: A Couple's Wilderness Journey from Lake Superior to Northern Canada, is a memoir that chronicles her 1,700-mile canoe honeymoon to Wollaston Lake, Saskatchewan, where she spent a winter in an isolated island cabin.  The book has been short listed for several awards including the Foreword Book of the Year in adventure, the Midwest Booksellers Choice Awards, and the Northeastern Minnesota Book Awards.

$10 per person. Visit www.eauclairearts.com to register by Friday, October 10.
