Constructing Liberty

A FREE professional-development opportunity for Wisconsin Teachers
funded by a Department of Education Teaching American History grant:

This spring, we’re able to offer a unique and excellent opportunity to earn one graduate credit while attending a national conference -- the Organization of American Historians (OAH) conference in Milwaukee this April. (Your sessions will be Friday evening, April 20, to Sunday afternoon, April 22.)

We cover the OAH conference fees, hotel (based on double occupancy), and offer allowances or subsidies for travel, parking, and food.

The conference is part of a larger course of online study offered FREE to Wisconsin teachers working in the areas of Wisconsin covered by CESAs 3-12 (your school does not need to be a member of a CESA, nor a public school).

You'll get:

  • Readings from, lectures by, and discussions with historians. Understand and be better able to teach key narratives in American history.
  • Ways to identify and find threads in U.S. and Wisconsin history that are as timely today as at any point in American history.
  • FREE graduate credit, or a stipend, upon completion of all coursework.
  • FREE lodging at the Doubletree, downtown Milwaukee, based on double occupancy.
  • SUBSIDIES to offset meals and travel.

The program is not only for history and social studies teachers! One of last year's fellows had this to say:

The Constructing Liberty Program ... connected me with other teachers from around the state, providing me a great networking community. As an EBD teacher, I am always looking for ways to provide meaningful, hands-on learning activities that will motivate reluctant learners.

North High School, Eau Claire

Educators from all schools in the CESA 3-12 area are eligible and welcome to apply. However, space is limited, so you should act quickly to get a spot.

As required by the grant, teachers from schools listed as not meeting AYP (annual yearly progress) and SIFI (schools identified for improvement) will receive priority.

Once you've read the e-brochure, you can find a PDF application here that you can print out and fill in by hand...

...Or, you can find an Word file here that you can download, update in MSWord, re-save, and email.

Constructing Liberty -- funded by a Department of Education Teaching American History grant -- is a collaboration between the Chippewa Valley Museum, the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, and CESA 10. A consortium of ten Wisconsin CESAs (3-12) will provide regional support for the three-year project.

Is your school in the eligible area? It is if it's any school (public or private, CESA member or not) covered by this area:
