Did you know?
CVM serves as a community gathering place for several special affinity groups and organizations. Below are featured three of our “regulars” that we host, along with dates and times for their meetings included.
Weekly:
Tree City Guild Rug Hook Crafters. Tuesdays, 10 am – 2 pm. Orpha Blaisdell introduced rug hook crafting to Eau Claire in 1956. It was originally offered as a class through the city’s Parks & Rec Department with Orpha serving as the first instructor. Rug hook crafters use a cutter to prepare strips of material, mainly wool. These strips are then hooked securely to a frame commonly set with Monk’s cloth—which to a painter, would be their canvas—and may be sized to fit the dimensions of the rug desired. Rug hook artists follow free form patterns, or those taken from a kit, a catalog, or even their own imaginations! The Tree City Guild welcomes new members. Check the museum store to see examples of their finished work on display!
Monthly:
Genealogy Society. Second Saturday of each month, September-May, 9 am – 12 noon. The Genealogical Research Society of Eau Claire is a non-profit, education society dedicated to the preservation of genealogy and genealogical sources in the Eau Claire area. Meetings begin at 10 a.m., with informal help and coffee being shared by members at 9:00 a.m. until the start of the meeting. The public is invited.
Clearwater Fiber Guild. Third Sunday of the month, 2-4 pm. Organized by founding members Jeannie Drysdale and Dianne Read-Jackson, this group is celebrating its nine year anniversary in 2011. Comprised of individuals who share a passion for spinning raw fibers into yarn, the guild also arranges occasional field trips and offers demonstrations. Beyond their skills of using drop spindles and spinning wheels, various members are known for their talents of tatting, fiber dyeing, knitting, weaving, and even raising alpacas! Visitors may watch guild members in action at their meetings, or see them every 4th of July at CVM’s annual Family Fair celebration.

Wednesdays, on January 4, 18 and 25

Back by popular demand, Nelva Dykema, a master of braided wool rugs, will teach the skills needed to create a beautiful, colorful rug! She will instruct participants as they practice the steps, including preparing the materials and getting started, braiding, lacing and finishing the rug. Participants can have a good start on a small rug by the end of the workshop. This class meets three times. You do NOT have to attend all three sessions! $25 for members or $30 for non-members. Already attended a workshop and want a refresher course? For $10, come to three sessions to jog your memory and get Nelva’s help. Call Liz Reuter at 715-834-7871 to register by Tuesday, December 27. Class space is limited.
February
Saturday, 4: Fiber Arts Festival. 11 am-4 pm. Join us for our third annual day long celebration of the fiber arts! Watch over 30 local fiber artists demonstrate their skills in many mediums, including loom work weaving; rug hooking and braiding; spinning, knitting, and more. Learn about each artist's special skills and techniques and enjoy their beautiful creations on display! Select artists will teach hands-on-lessons to all interested individuals and provide the equipment and supplies needed for making a small finished sample. Visitors are also welcome to bring along their own projects, either in progress or completed, to participate in an idea exchange with others. Select artists will offer visitors the opportunity to order custom work, or have a sampling of their finished textiles available for purchase.
Thursday, 22: Docent In-Service. 10 am-12 Noon, or 1-3 pm. Prepare for annual Adventures in History field trip experiences for ECASD third graders. New in 2012: History Quest option for teachers choosing this alternative. Join us for either the morning or afternoon session, with lunch served in between. Call Karen at 715-834-7871 to RSVP.
Saturdays, 18, 25: Tribal Art Weekend Workshops: Beaver Shield Making. 10:30 am-12:30 pm (early finish) or 3:30 pm (late finish). Tribal artist and Lac Courte Oreilles member Dick Mindykowski, owner of Native Designs, leads participants in crafting their own hand-made beaver shields. Beaver pelts and wood for the hoop frames are harvested and prepared in advance by the artist. Trapping and tanning techniques will be shared during the workshop. Attendees will use full-size pelts, hand-tanned leather, glass beads, wild fowl feathers, and other authentic materials to complete their projects. These will be signed by attendees and by the artist. Those planning to stay for the full-length session will experience most stages of shield-making on their own. Those who choose the early finish option (2 hours) will skip certain steps, as these will be completed for them by the artist. Please bring a sack lunch, if you prefer to do the longer version. RSVP deadlines of December 31 (Workshop I.) and January 15 (Workshop II.) -- because beaver pelts need to be ordered in advance. Space is limited to 25 attendees per session. Enrollment is open to ages 13 and older, or 12 and under with adult supervision. Families are welcome and may sign up together to share workshop costs. Fees are $50 for museum members and $55 for non-members. Call Karen Jacobson at 715-834-7871 for more information, or to register.
