Other Non-Fiction

Papa’s Legacy: The Growing of Grandchildren, Joan Fleming, Beaver Pond Press, $14.95
This is a book for grandparents of any age: those who have just learned about an upcoming birth and those that are old hats at the art of being a grandparent. This is a book for grandparents with spirit — and those who want to revive theirs. It’s for men and women who feel the vital and emotional connection with their children and grandchildren and want to make the most of those important relationships by finding ways to bring fun and adventure to their times together. Joan Fleming, a resident of Eau Claire, is a seminar leader and author as well as a grandmother of nine.

They Just Grew Up, Marv Lansing, $18.00 While this book was originally written for Lansing’s family, the book offers a compelling portrait of the 20th century. A long-time superintendant of the Eau Claire school district, Lansing was a founder of the Chippewa Valley Museum and served as an officer or board member for twenty years.

Population: 485 , Michael Perry, $25.00 "After a twelve-year absence, a real-life prodigal son returns to his hometown -- New Auburn, Wisconsin, population: 485 -- and joins the volunteer fire and rescue department.  In a place where men post claims of manhood on their truck bumpers, where the local vigilante is a farmer's wife armed with a pistol and a Bible, and where the most senior firefighter is a cross-eyed butcher with one kidney and two ex-wives (both of whom work at the only gas station in town), writer Michael Perry sets out "to meet my neighbors at the invitation of the fire siren."  The emergencies are real, the setting are surreal, and with each foray into the boondocks, we piece together the history of a people and a place.  By turns fiery and funny, violent and gentle, Population:485 is the true account of a search for rootedness in a place from the past.
